In practice, cities and municipalities usually clear many streets of snow. The owners of the adjacent properties have to take care of the sidewalks. Homeowners and landlords can pass this duty on to their tenants. This is then recorded in the rental agreement.

Necessary: Anyone who is responsible for winter service should take this task seriously. If you travel, are sick, or have to work, you need to find a replacement. Because if someone slips because they haven’t been evacuated, you may have to pay damages and compensation for pain and suffering. Or you risk even a negligent bodily harm penalty.

Where Does Snow Have To Be Cleared?

In front of your front door, you have to ensure that the sidewalks can be walked on: This means shoveling snow and spreading it when it is slippery. However, it is sufficient if you shovel a path at least one meter wide so that two pedestrians can pass each other. You don’t need to clear the way for parked drivers to the sidewalk. Above all, the main entrance, the route to the garbage cans, parking spaces, or garages must be accessible on the property.

The Right Equipment For Clearing Snow

With the right equipment for earth development, however, the white mass can be mastered well. The essential equipment includes a snow shovel, a snow shovel, and thick gloves. To protect against cold fingers, you must choose a large enough model so that a layer of warmth can form between the hand and the fabric. This ensures flexible hands with a secure grip. After all, what use is the best shovel if your hands can no longer grab hold of it? If you have problems with frozen snow or ice surfaces, it is best to have an ice pusher on hand.

In most cases, pure muscle strength is sufficient to clear the sidewalk and property of ice and snow. If there is only a little snow, a snow shovel is sufficient. Depending on the amount of snow and the size of the area that you have to clear, you can also use a snow shovel or snow tub, for example, from Fiskars. However, if you live in a snowy area and have to keep a large area free of snow, it may even be worth buying a snowblower.

Back-Friendly Snow Shoveling

To avoid unnecessary strain on the back, the snow shovel should be as light as possible and have a long handle so that the posture remains upright. Especially in wet snow, you shouldn’t load too much on the shovel: lift less, push more.

When unloading the snow to the side, always turn your whole body. When lifting, it is best to walk in a step position: To do this, bend one leg forward and shift your weight onto the front leg.
